Etihad, a new connection with the Middle East and Asia

The Barcelona airport closed the year with the addition of a new regular link from the airline Etihad, which connects Abu Dhabi with El Prat after a six-and-a-half-hour journey. Not seen in Barcelona before, this young company, which has recently celebrated its fifteenth anniversary, is the third airline of the Persian Gulf that lands in our city and does so to compete with two of its neighbours in the region: Emirates and Qatar Airways.

His arrival in Barcelona has been done aboard a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, which is less than a year old. Barcelona has become the 91st destination of Etihad’s global network, present in 53 countries both in cargo and passenger services as well as only cargo flights. The company has 110 aircraft with an average age of six years, 22,500 employees of 152 nationalities, with several branch offices that offer ground handling services, crew training, maintenance, and engineering both in their country and others.

The transport of goods is another service that stands out from Etihad, as most of the regular flights operate with a fleet of wide-cabin aircraft, which means they have space in their holds for both the luggage of the passage and to offer air cargo space from Barcelona for the entire Asia and Oceania.

The Moroccan exports have grown by 15% while the Netherlands have increased their production.

Spanish tomato production is threatened by the low prices of some countries production and the productivity of others. From Morocco, massive imports are being produced at low prices. In addition, the strong increase of the production in others countries community as Holland has sunk the prices in the market Spanish. This situation has had a direct impact on exports. He sector calls for more controls in the imports and measures of help.

The exports of fresh Spanish tomato amounted to 403.338 tons, a 3% less over the same period of the previous year, with turnover one 5.87% lower, according to the data of the first quarter. On the other hand, Morocco exports increased 5 percent, to 178,000 tons.

For the Federation Spanish of producers and exporters of fruits and vegetables (Fepex) are three those reasons that have caused this situation. First, an avalanche of entries of tomato from Morocco without those controls necessary. Secondly, the lack of an alternative market sales that were made in Russia. Finally, there is the increase of production in countries like the Netherlands, where the surfaces of greenhouses almost have doubled in a decade, to the 1,760 hectares in 2016 with a production of 900,000 tons intended for all markets, including Spain, where you can buy Dutch tomato to less than one euro per kilo.

CONSEQUENCES OF THE BREXIT FOR SPAIN, MORE EXPENSIVE EXPORTS

Imports from the United Kingdom also will be limited after the departure of the EU

The decision of the British people out of the European Union or Brexit, will have consequences at a global level and, therefore, also for Spanish Economy. While the United Kingdom is not in the Monetary Union. These are some of the consequences of the Brexit to Spain.

Spain depends on, for different reasons, of Great Britain. Spanish dependence on tourism or the high exports with destination the British Isles, join the uncertainty about the future of the pound sterling.

However, not being the United Kingdom within the Monetary Union the consequences of the Brexit for Spain and the other Member States will be softer, although we must not belittle that both will suffer.

Changes

Being the main condition of European Economic Union the free movement of people and goods between Member States, the both main effects on the economy of them would be clear. These privileges are one of the reasons why the Government campaigned in favor of keeping the country in the Union, so it seems inevitable that we continue seeing variations in this aspect and more restrictions in the immigration entry to the Islands.

Concerning the goods is not opinion that exports and imports will be more expensive with destination or origin in the United Kingdom by the reappearance of tariff rates.

It Brexit already was having some consequences direct on the British economy, and especially on its currency that had fallen more than one 10% respect to the euro in them last months.

The direct consequences of the Brexit for Spain

Uniting these factors (pound, taxes, borders), tourism, one of the most important sectors of the Spanish economy, can be put to tremble: Information from the INE (National Statistics Institute) of 2015 show as the United Kingdom is, by far, the main transmitter of tourists with more than 15 million visitors (four more than France and Germany 5).

Not there is that forget that, between other things, in favour it export (the tourism is a form of export) the Bank Central European takes several months) taking measures extraordinary for cause that the euro is follow depreciating concerning other large coins. Spain would shudder significantly taking note that, according to a recent report by the World Travel & Tourism Council, 16% of the entire Spanish economy comes from the sector of travel and its linkages.

By what looks like that would be a movement that would harm to the own United Kingdom since raise their imports and exports; but not only to them, also to those who carried out these operations with the British Isles, including Spain and mainly its tourism sector.
